Blog 18: 2-Hour Meeting Answer #3

1.  What is your essential question?

"What is most important for a woodworker to consider in creating an aesthetic piece of furniture?"
2.  What is your third answer to your essential question (write your third answer in a complete sentence)?

I strongly believe that my third answer should be the texture of the wood grain, because as a woodworker, if you design your piece with a unique grain texture, it will draw attention and compliment your furnitures purpose, as well as make people want to interact with it.
3.  What are three details to support or justify your third answer (details are examples or facts)?

The texture of the woods grain brings the wood to life, compliments your furniture, and is unique which will make people want to interact with it.
4.  What source helped you prove this answer is justified for your essential question?

The Soul of a Tree A Woodworker's Reflections by George Nakashima & my mentor David Wade.
5.  What do you plan to study next and why?

I plan to look for woods with unique grain textures to provide visual examples for my two hour presentation, and I plan to study the biology to better understand why the grain texture looks the way it does.

Blog 16: 2- Hour Meeting Answer #2

1.  What is your essential question?
"What is most important for a woodworker to consider in creating an aesthetic piece of furniture?"
2.  What is your second answer to your essential question (write your second answer in a complete sentence)?
I strongly believe that my second answer to this EQ is Joinery because as a woodworker, it is important to be able to put together a joint that is complicated in order to have a stronger structural support along with a unique pattern where the joinery is.
3.  What are three details to support or justify your second answer (details are examples or facts)?
Joinery provides a unique pattern to furniture, makes a structure strong (function), and is one detail that the human eye looks at.
4.  What source helped you prove this answer is justified for your essential question?
"Design Book Eight" by Gibson Scott & my mentor David Wade.5.  What do you plan to study next with your second answer and why?
"I plan to continue my study of answer 2 by doing examples of different joinery with unique patterns (or functions)."Introduction:  Hello, my name is Sebastian Yanes, my senior project topic is Woodworkings and my essential question is "What is most important for a woodworker to consider in creating an aesthetic piece of furniture?"
  • Sponge: Ask the students "What do you know about Woodworking?"  Call on 2-3 students.
  • Second Answer: My first answer is Finishing and my second answer is Joinery
  • Details: Joinery is the second detail people tend to see, it can be made as a unique patter, and makes a structure strong/ functional.
  • Conclusion: I plan to study different joinery because I want to explore which ones display a unique pattern to furniture and which ones are stronger.

Independent Component 2 Plan Approval

CONTENT:
(1) Write a description of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.

I plan to use the things I have learned from my research and presentations, to show a perfect example of what my best answers are to my EQ by making a wall- mountable bookshelf.
(2) Describe in detail how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.

Planning, designing, and building will most definitely take 30 hours of work put into it because it is a lot of work to design something completely original. And building it will also take up a lot of time.
(3) How does your independent study component relate to your working EQ?
It helps me realize the amount of work that must be done for my two best answers. And by doing so, I can better understand my two answers by the experience I have gained.

Blog 14: Independent Component 1

  • LITERAL
    (a)  “I,  Sebastian Yanes, affirm that I completed my independent component which represents 30 hours of work.”
    (b) "Classic Joints with Power Tools" by Yeung Chan, "The Custom Furniture Source Book" by Kerry Pierce, "Furniture by James Krenov and Students" by James Krenov.
    (c) Independent Component Hour Log
  • (d) I made my very own joint using two other types of joints (miters joint and a tenon). Although it was not original (considering I combined two different joints) I still managed to mathematically find the correct dimensions to strengthen the joint. I also came up with the project I will be doing for my Independent Component 2. I made scale drawings and took measurements in order to build a book shelf.
  • INTERPRETIVE
This demonstrated 30 hours of work because I had to really think and come up with something original. It required a lot of measurements, drawings, trial & errors, thinking, and math in order to make scale drawings. It is also significant because I was able to explore my answer two which MAY be joinery making, and I also was able to decided what i wanted to do for my Independent Component 2. So this was all very significant and extremely helpful because I learned very important things such as 1) how to make scaled drawings 2) how to make a jig (or template) 3) what I will be doing for my Independent Component 2 4) a very possible answer 2 and 5) how to make something original and creative using natural things.

  • APPLIEDThis component helped me understand the foundation of my topic better because I was exposed to thee main things about being a wood worker that created very beautiful furniture. I was put in the shoes of a wood worker and had to think of MY OWN way to come up with a joint (what holds the wood together) and also come up with an original idea of mine. It was a challenge not to just simply copy another piece of furniture. Specific examples as to how I understood the foundation of my topic are ; 1) how I managed to design something original that came straight out of MY OWN mind 2) understanding the things taken into consideration by a wood worker in order to simply get his ideas out on paper and make a scale drawing 3) how to think original and come up with "a way to better hold (or put together) and join the pieces of wood for my furniture". These are the three most specific examples as to how this component helped me better understand my topic.
